DONE!

Once we had finished editing and adding sounds into the movie clip, we then made sure everything was fit into place and then showed one of our media teachers and she said she liked the clip and asked if we were happy with it. We decided we were and discussed in a group how we done and together boom productions came to agreement that we had finished.

Re-Shooting & Finalising

After handing our first draft into our teachers, then came back to us, telling us to change a few parts in the movie and to change some of the editing techniques and sounds that we used. We all took this into consideration and got re-shooting as soon as possible. We started to re-shoot the following week and got all the re-shooting done in a couple of days. We then started to edit the clips and fall everything into place. Once we had edit the clips and made sure the move flowed, we then added the sounds which we wanted, we used an alarm sound for the morning he wakes up, which worked quite well and then we used a sound for everytime the chracter had a flashback. This worked extremely well also, and along with that the music which we had selected to play for the flashbacks worked well and gave a suspense atmosphere.

More Editing

After filming the present day scenes, we then linked all the clips together using final cut, which was interesting and enjoyable as we saw the movie coming together, it made us feel a lot more happy with what we were succeeding in doing. We all played a huge part in creating the editing and finally came up with our first draft, which we showed our teachers, to see what kind of verdict we got. Resulting on what things we had to change and reshoot.

More Filming

After editing the three flashbacks, we then had to film the present day clips, which was good fun as we had to use a lot of mise-en-scene before editing as we had to make sure that our main character had the make up and costume correct before setting up the camera in the places that we needed. But once we had sorted out all the mise-en-scene and the camera set up, we found it extremely easy to film the three present day clips we needed to. We filmed in the domestic house, first of all in the bedroom, which was quite easy to film as we had planned before filming this scene with our storyboards. Our next scene we filmed was in the house's kitchen which was quite easy also due to the planning that we did before hand and the same witht he final scene in the hallway, with the main character leaving the house. On a whole it only took us a couple of hours to film the present day scenes that we needed.

Editing

We had to use FinalCut Express, when editing our movie clip, which none of us knew how to use at all, so before editing we had a mess around with the software so that we could find out what the basics were, helping us to be able to start our editing for our movie clip. In the two lessons which we starting editing we were able to edit, the pub scene and the alley way scene, which we were really happy and pleased about. We found it difficult to edit the fight scene, but after another lesson we were able to edit all these three scenes which are going to be our flashbacks.

Start Filming

After planning our storyboards, shot list and locations, we have finally now started to film and we have started to film in our first location, which is the Black Horse Pub and we found it easy to film here as we were able to use a wide range of different shots and angles. After filming at the Black Horse Pub, we then decied to film down the alleyway next to it, which wasn't planned, so we thought we would see what kind of shots we could get down there. We found that the lighting was quite hard down the alleyway put we used the best of our lighting we could. After filming down the alleyway, we then decided we had another time to film down Longmead Road, this was the hardest bit of our filming as we had to film the fight scene here, we found this difficult as none of us have any experincing in this kind of acting or filming it. But overall the first day of filming went extremely better than we thought and we know feel a lot more confident in filming.

Location 2 - A House, A Bedroom, Doorway & Kitchen

Our second location is going to someone house which will be the filming of the present day in the movie. It is important that we know what all our location's our as it gives us a chance to check the locations out and then evaluate what shots and lighting etc we need in that location. This location will film the last of the clips that we need for our movie.

Below is the bedroom where the main character will be awaking to find out that his has got cuts and bruises over his face and that he will have is first flashback. When we went to have a look at this location we found out that the bedroom is quite small but we found that we have some good places to put some shots. This is what made us understand that it is important to go to your locations and see if what shots and angles you can use.

The Bedroom:

Our other location was the hallway to the door, which were are going to be using to show the main character leaving the house at the very end. It is quite a useful location as you have the stairs to use, so that you can get all sorts of shots and angles, which is going to be useful when filming our clip.

The Hallway

And the final location we used was a kitchen, which was a nice large domestic kitchen allowing us to think threw what kind of camera angles and shots to use. On a whole going to this location it has help as a group to decide what kind of shots etc, we are going to use. Not only that but it is always useful to check out your location before filming just to make sure you have selected the correct locations.

Location 1 - The Black Horse Pub & Longmead Road

Our first location at which Booom Productionz filmed at was a pub called The Black Horse, which will show the main character coming out of drunk and then entering the alleyway next to it. It is important that we take pictures of our locations before filming it as it will give us an idea on what time to get there and film and to make sure that we have the right kind of shots.

Below is the The Black Horse Pub, which will show the first flashback scene, as you can see from the photo it is quite a reasonably side pub and by looking at the photo we have discussed as a group that this is the ideal destination for the first flashback in our film, not only that but there is an alleyway next to it which is perfect for the character to walk down.

The Black Horse Pub:

The Location which is at the end of the alley way, which can be seen below also, is perfect as it links the Pub and this road really well. Are other location which we will be using for our film is this alleyway which is shown below and Longmead Road which can also be shown below. This is where the main character will be followed and badly beaten up. We dicussed in a group that this would be a perfect location as the Pub can be access from the alley so it links all really well together.

The Alley Way

Longmead Road:

Props/Costumes & Actors List

Below is the Props, Costumes and Actors List which is important to have as if we do not have this then it is hard to know when we come to our filming what kind of costumes and props we need for our film. The Props and Costumes are vital and we have to make sure we get these correct, these kind of things can make a huge difference to make the film look realistic.
Below is the Props/Customes/Actors List:

Risk Assessment

When we decided to film at Dedworth's Black Horse Pub, Longmead Road and the Domestic House, there are many different risks and hazards that we had to consider when working in the area. We wanted to make sure that we were all safe and secure, before we started to film.

Before we went to film, we filled out this risk assesment sheet which is showed to our teacher to allow us to proceed filming our ideas in a safe environment.

Storyboards

After deciding on our plot, and completing the shot list, we were able to start drawing up our storyboards. Callan decided to do the drawings as Myself and Ricardo did not feel comfortbale in drawing for the story boards. We made five storyboard sheets in the end with detail about the type of shots and the dialogue/sound used in the certain clips. We all came to an agreement with the storyboard and our happy with our decisions. As you can see from our storyboards, it links very closey with our shot list, we used our shot list as a guideline to our storyboards.

Below is the storyboards and the information on them, we need to do these first before deciding on what locations we should film at:

Idea Generation & Shot List

Boom Productions first of all came up with three idea's which we were considering to pick for our film opening, but going into them with more depth we have finally selected one of three and have also created a shot list for the film. The idea in which we have selected is that a character comes out drunk from his local pub and finds himself going down a dark gloomy alley. He then will bump into a couple of youths at the end of the alley, where the tension will be at its highest. The youths will then follow him and severly beat him up so that he makes him pass out. These will be the flashbacks, the film will start off  when he wake up in the morning with cuts and bruises on his body and face and then he will get out of bed and realise what has happened by looking in the mirror, after this it will cut to the first flashback where he is staggering out the pub and just starts to enter the alley. It will then come back to the present day and will show him making himself a cup of tea and recieving a text message from a friend, it will then cut back to a flashback of him walking down the alley. It will then cut back to present day where he is washing is face off and running down the stairs. Then it will cut to the final flashback where he will get followed and badly beaten up, it will then finally cut back to the present day where he collects his things and leaves the house to find who has done this too him. This is the main idea and the plot together, this is our final idea and below shows the shot list for the idea of the film.

Shot List for The Idea

Below is the Shot List which Myself, Callan and Ricardo have come up with for our film, we have to make sure we do this as it gives us a good idea already what kind of clips we are going to film. It is important that we do planning like this before we film so that we do not have any problems further into the production stage.
Below is the Shot List that we have created:

Result of Researching Target Auidence

As a result tof the questionnaire we have decided to aim our film 'Flashback' to a small niche audience as its going to be a thriller with a twist, not only that but it will not catch mainstream viewers as it will not have major special effects and the professionalism of the major six production companys. The film will hopefully catch the audience's eyes and the film with surely keep them entertain. Our target audience would be aimed at the age group that we will be aiming our media product at will be predominantly 70% male as we feel some of the content is mainly related to teenaged boys. This leaves the other 30% being female as we feel not as many girls will enjoy the films concept and plot of violence, drugs and alcohol. We say 30% purely because some girls in urban areas will actually enjoy watching these types of films due to the fact that they can relate to it. The target audience, which we will be aiming at, are people aged between 15-24 as once again many teenagers and young adults are under the influence of drugs and alcohol and can relate very closely to this. The social class that this film will be aimed at would be perhaps lower class or the working class as it contains features that they might have encountered themselves. Looking into psychographics we think that the category used will be strugglers. This is because as strugglers can be heavy consumers of alcohol and people who are disorganised. We tried to relate this with the young men in our film very stereotypically, and negatively.

Target Audience Questionnaire

We gave this questionaire to twenty five people to find out the target audience for our two minute opening of our film. We needed to do this so we could find what kind of auidence we are going to be filming for and to see if the genre is the correct genre for us to be filming for.
The questionaire is as follows below:
The Results of are questionaire were that the most favourite films were, Dark Knight, Gone in Sixty Seconds and Mission Impossible, which all have similar kind of genres which relate to the genre of our film. The two favourite genres which were selected were Comedy and Action/Adventure and Thriller. Most people thought that Thriller was a interesting genre as they are also suprises in the films which are in this genre. The favourite filmed varied but the majority were Action/Adventure. And finally everyone said that yes that they would watch our two minute opening to our film, which is very good.

Preliminary Completed

We have just recently finished our preliminary task, which was a interesting task to do. We have the video which can be seen below, it took us a couple of lessons to film and then an extra lesson to edit. On a whole it wasn't an easy job but we got the job done. Myself and Callan were the main two who were filming and setting up the mis-en-squence and setting. As on the other hand Ricardo and one of our friends who was willing to help, were the two people who did the acting.
Overall the preliminary video was a success but there is room for improvement to be made, it was useful to use a camera and see what kind of shots we could do. Also it was quite useful using some sort of editing software and getting use to the basics of that. Here is our preliminary including 180 degree rule, match on action, and shot reverse shot...

Storyboards for Preliminary Task

Below are the storyboards, in which myself, Ricardo and Callan produced for our preliminary task. By looking at the sketches you can see that they are not detailed as we our just trying to outline what we our going to film and what is going to be happening in that certain clip/frame. In each of the frames, we have stated what shot we are going to use, and the sound effects which are used. This will help us when it comes to editing the preliminary as we will then know a clearer idea of how the clip will flow.

By doing storyboards in means that we can make sure we know what we are doing before hand and then resulting in our clips to flow well and to be well planned.

Preliminary Task

Callan, Ricardo and Myself have been set the preliminary task to do over the next week to introduce us to the film making process. Our preliminary has to be roughly 30 seconds long and we have also been set some criteria in which we have to include in our preliminary task, these three criteria are:

Match on action
Shot reverse shot
180 degree rule

The task in which we have been given must include the following things:
  • Character opening a door crossing a room and sitting down.
  • Then they speak to another character across the room use a couple of lines of dialogue
  • And the three criteria include while this is being filmed

We have come up with a storyboard where a pupil enters a classroom where another pupil is present, they then exchanges line, stating about whether one of the pupils has some goods, they both agree and are happy with the result, so finish the deal with a hug showing their respect for one another.

We will be starting our preliminary task in our next lesson and then will be using the apple mac pro, to edit what we have filmed and then uploading it, in our next post.

Name & Logo

The name of our production comapany is called BoooM Proudctionz, we decided to come up with this name as it had that kind of ring to it, that all of us liked, resulting us in picking this as I our name for our company. We then had to decide to come up with a logo, we decided to make something that was simple but effective, after discussing in what it should look like, we finally came up with this logo, which can be seen below.

Hermeneutic Code Essay

Hermeneutic Code Essay
In this essay, I will be talking about the Hermeneutic Code and the ways in which it is used in the film opening of Saw II. Hermeneutic codes are very useful in the film industry as they keep the audience occupied and interested. Some of the Hermeneutic codes which are used are snares, which deliberately avoid the truth and send the audience into believing something completely different to what actually is going to happen. Partial answers are used also, which reveal some of the final outcome but not all of it, this is mainly used to build up a suspense atmosphere. Equivocation are used as well which are a mixture of the truth and snares as well, this is used to also make the audience think completely different of what the outcome will be. There is also a code called jamming but isn't used a lot as it is a code which suggests to the audience that there is a problem which may be completely unsolvable. I will be talking about how Saw II uses these hermeneutic codes in the opening of the film and how it makes the audience want to continue watching.

The hermeneutic codes which are used in the Saw II opening are snares, as they want the audience to think they on their own how the film will develop and conclude. There is also some partial answers as the first Saw film is the one before Saw II and the audience already know some of the story and truth but actually don't know the whole story.
Learning about the hermeneutic codes it has helped us as to understand what kind of techniques and codes we have to use for our film, by watching the opening of saw, I have a good understanding of the enigma's and snares which I should or could use in our media product.

3 Peices of Textual Analysis of Similar Texts

In this post, I am speaking about three different film openings and what kind of things that they have in common. The three films in which I am going to be talking about are:
  • Green Street
  • Football Factory
  • Cass
I picked these three films because they all have football related violence in them, making the very similar to one another. Not only that but we have decide in our group that we want to relate our media product to a violence and alcohol area and although these three films also have football violence related, there are the closest films which relate extremely well to the idea's that we are thinking about.

Green Street:

This a poster of the front cover of the Green Street DVD.

Description of Opening:
In the opening sceen of Green Street, there is an establishing shot used to show a setting of a train station. There then is a cut to show football holligians singing and coming up the steps, and from what dialogue they are using you can tell that they are westham fans. Once they have finished their singing, there is then a shot-reverse-shot showing other football holigians on the other side of the train station. Dialogue is then used and
swear words are used to show that the men are violent and dangerous. This continues for a few seconds, and then a train pulls up to the station finishing the scene and then it cuts to outside, with the football holigians fighting and beating each other, emphasising their violence. Just from watching this opening scene, the auidence can tell that the film is going to be about football violence and holligians. This film has many concepts that we want to include in our movie clip which we have to make. The main things which stood out in this opening for us was the violence that was included in the film opening, it was useful watching the kind of shots and angles and mise-en-scene that they use in this opening as it gives us some really good idea's about what we should include in our opening. The costumes that the charactes wear in the opening of green street are hoodies, jeans and jackets which hide most of the character face, this emphaise to us that they don't want people to know who they are. Also the angles and shots that they use in this opening for the violence scene is quick and fast cuts with a wide range of camera shots, making it seem fast and in your face. On a whole this opening has helped us as a group a lot with the idea that we want to generate for our media product.

Football Factory:
This is a poster of the Football Factory DVD.

Description of Opening:
In the first scene of The Football Factory starts off with an establishing shot of some men wearing very stereotypical hooligian clothes. Their dialogue or cockney slang and swearing just adds to the way that they are. There are a few establishing shots used just to emphaise different football hooligians, and a security camera effect is added to some shots, to emphaise that the men are being watched and are dangerous. The men all meet up near a local pub, and the violence starts off with two young adult men, going over to this other man and punching him to the ground, the violence then gets worse with them then beating and violently attacking other hooligians as they come out of the pub. Once again, like in Green Street, the auidence can tell that The Football Factory is going to be about football hooligians and violence.

Cass:

This is the front cover of the DVD of Cass.

Description of Opening:
In the opening of Cass, it shows the main character being a bouncer at night club near Millwall and a shot is then shown of two men in a car speaking about football, indicating violence to hurt the bouncer, this indicates from the start that this film is going to be about violence. The guys in the car then exit the car and approach this black man, whom is the main character and shoot him a few times. There then is a flashback showing 20 years ago, showing what the main character was like. They then follow a group of football hooligains and attack and abuse some other football hooligains. Once again from the first to main clips in this movie, the auidence can tell that the film is going to be about football hooligians and violence.

Comparisions
  • Similar storylines
  • Violence and football hooligians are present in all three openings
  • Cockney and swearing is used a lot in the characters dialogues which emphaises to the violence and personality of the characters.
  • Settings are all very similar, in London.
  • All three start of with violence to emphaise to the auidence that the film is about football violence and that this is going to be present throughout.

Research into Similar Media Text

I have picked The Dark Knight to relate to the film in which my group are going to create. I have watched the film has he contradicts very well with the kind of conventions that we want to include in our film. The genre of the Dark Knight is a Drama/Thriller and the four technical codes are used cleverly to represent a film which seems to link back to its genre.
The camera shots/angles that are used in this film opening are very broad, as there is a lot of suspense and drama throughout. More angles and camera shots makes the audience feel anxious and worried about what is going to happen next. Not only that but more camera shots/angles are used to create snares and make the audience believe something else.  Also these shots are used to make the audience have to think, to try and get what is going on to happen in the film, if there were not many camera angles and shots, it wouldn’t make the film exciting and full of drama/suspense. Many camera shots and angles are also used to give the audience a good idea of the setting of the film.
The editing used in the opening of the Dark Knight is related very well to the conventions of its genre. Fast frequent cuts are used for suspense and drama and these cuts add to the atmosphere. Not only that but there is a lot of 180 degree and 30 degree editing which makes the audience have a sense of what is happening in the opening of this film. These editing techniques are used to create a tense and suspense atmosphere.
The sound effects and music, which are used in the opening of this film, are loud and deep sounds and the tempo of the music and sounds are fast to relate to the fast frequent cuts and to add the suspense and drama. There is only a small amount of dialogue in the opening of this film as the audience have a lot to take in from the suspense of the film early on.
The mise – en – scene used in the opening of this film is good as there is a very good mixture as the costumes used are represented extremely well as most of the characters are covered up and the audience don’t know who is who. The setting is in a bank as there is a bank robbery relating to the drama and suspense atmosphere. Not only that but the acting and props are extremely good and relate very well in knowing what kind of film this is going to be.
By watching the opening of this film, it has given me a rough estimate of what I will need to include in the opening of the film that we are going to be filming. I need to take into consideration all four of these technical codes.

Initial Idea's

We have come up with a few inital idea's and will we decide on one of the idea's that we are going to use for a two minute clip for our opening of our film. Are initial idea's were:

1. A buisnessman who is a hitman, and was ordered to kill someone for a mission and then recieving a huge amount of money. This would be based around a train station, or train tracks.

2. A man who is spiked at club and cannot remember what happens the night before, in the morning, he has a few items on him that remind of what happended the night before. This would be based around a club and also someones house.

3. Would be based around our second idea, but slightly different locations, and instead of the man going to a a local club, he comes out drunk from his local pub, he then will wake up in the morning we cuts and bruises, and will wonder what has happened to him but he then has flashbacks about the night before and realises what happens.

Outline of Brief

In this post I am going to be writing about the brief which has been given to us. The brief consists of my group completing and making a two minute opening of a film, which we will need to evaluate. We will have to do research throughout the course to get the best possible outcome for the film. The research in which we will have to do is to think about some inital idea's, research into similar texts, analyse 3 pieces of similar texts, research into a potentional target auidience, file location shots with some text about mise-en-scene, a risk assesment form if needed, synopsis of idea's, casting, props and costumes list, shooting schedule, storyboards and script/screenplay. If we include the majority of these things throughout our blogs, it will show that we have planned and researched our course extremely well.

Introducing My Group

In this inital post, I will be introducing my media group in which we will be making a two minute opening of a film. There are three people, which are in my group, myself, Callan Mc and Ricardo L. Throughout our A/S media project we shall be making a preliminary task, many essays which we show the research we are doing in making our film and also adding updates and tasks throughtout the course. This is my blog and I hope that you can easily understand the updates and posts that are made.
